Regenerative and Developmental GenomicsResearch Area
Welcome to the Kusumi Lab web site. We use genomic approaches to study the evolution and function of genes that control regeneration and development in vertebrates. Lizards such as the green anole (Anolis carolinensis) and tadpoles including those of the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) are able to regenerate new tails that include cartilage, muscle, vascular, and nervous tissue. We are working to identify conserved genes and pathways involved in this remarkable regenerative process, with the ultimate goal of reactivating these processes for medical therapies. By comparing genomes of vertebrates, we are beginning to understand the genetic changes that are responsible for development of morphology and regenerative potential. We are currently completing genome sequencing for three species of anole lizards (Anolis apletophallus, A. frenatus, A. auratus) and the desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii).Current Members
