XB-LAB-69

Woodland Lab (retired)

Research Interests

Endodermal and germ cell development

Research Area

The Woodland Lab focused on the differentiation of cells arising from the vegetal pole of the Xenopus embryo. These are fated to form the endoderm and the primordial germ cells. Regarding the endoderm we studied gene networks that control the blastula and gastrula stages of endoderm differentiation, particularly focusing on the role of Sox17. With regard to the genome we were particularly interested in studying the formation of the germ cell determinant germ plasm. This involved both protein and RNA localisation, which are brought about by processes that often have general roles in cell polarity.
