Name: Dr. Béatrice C Durand
Position: Principal Investigator
Research Description:
The vertebrate nervous system emerges from a layer of neuroepithelial cells - the neural plate - constituted of Neural Stem Cells (NSC) and derivative progenitors. Wnt/β-catenin signaling organizes development of the vertebrate nervous system. It induces th Organizer, contributes to patterning of the neural plate, promotes proliferation of target cells and maintains neural stem cells. Our research focuses on a molecular pathway controlled by the homeodomain containing gene barhl2 that limits Wnt activity during early steps of neural development. We use Xenopus and cell lines as our main model systems.
