Name: Wade H. Powell
Position: Professor of Biology
Research Description:
I direct an undergraduate research program investigating the effects of environmental contaminants on the gene expression, physiology, and development of aquatic vertebrates, primarily Xenopus and Ambystoma. These studies center on the structure and function of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), an orphan receptor that mediates the toxicity of dioxin-like compounds from industrial wasted and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in crude oil and cigarette smoke.
