The polr1a protein is a DNA-directed RNA polymerase that catalyzes the transcription of ribosomal RNA genes. It localizes to the nucleolus and is required for proper rRNA synthesis and ribosome biogenesis. This protein functions in the development of neural crest-derived structures, including the craniofacial cartilage, and is involved in the formation of the otic vesicle and branchial arches. Expression is also detected in the developing brain, eye, and pronephros. [-]
