Larger Image Figure 1 Diversity of whole mount expression profiles retrieved from the screen. Examples of expression patterns obtained from the screen following whole mount in situ hybridization on stage 39 Xenopus tropicalis tadpoles. As expected from the origin of the cDNA libraries, a large proportion of the clones display expression in the nervous system including the eye (A) or in restricted areas of the nervous system such as the pineal gland (B) or floorplate/hypochord (C). Some are expressed in both the nervous system and in another tissue, such as the liver (D) or the somites (E). Other, however, are exclusively expressed outside the nervous system, for instance in the pronephros (F), in specialized cells of the epidermis, probably ionocytes (G), in blood islands and vessels (H) or in the endoderm (I). bi: blood islands; cg: cement gland; e: eye; end: endoderm; ep: scattered epidermal cells; fp: floorplate; h: heart; hb: hindbrain; hp: hypochord; isv: inter somitic vein; li: liver; mb: midbrain; pcv: posterior cardinal vein; pi: pineal gland; pr: pronephros; so: somites; sp: spinal chord. Tadpoles are shown in lateral view, dorsal to the top and anterior to the left. Gene symbol and gene description are indicated under each panel. Scale bar = 500 um.
